About Shumway Family Dentistry
At Shumway Family Dentistry, we believe every Montana family deserves a smile they can feel confident about; without the stress of confusing insurance, rushed appointments, or surprise bills. Led by Dr. Charles Shumway, DDS, a caring and experienced general dentist with nearly a decade in the field, we’re proud to provide compassionate, high-quality dental care to patients across Billings, MT and the surrounding Yellowstone County communities.
We’re not a corporate dental chain; we’re your neighbors. And like you, we value honesty, comfort, and long-term relationships built on trust. That’s why we take the time to explain your options, involve you in your treatment decisions, and never pressure you into anything you don’t need.
Whether you’re here for your child’s first cleaning, your own routine exam, a cosmetic touch-up, or an urgent dental emergency, you’ll always be treated with respect and care.
Meet Dr. Shumway
Dr. Charles Shumway has been practicing dentistry for more than eight years and has proudly served the Billings community since acquiring this long-standing practice in 2023. Born and raised in Idaho Falls, Idaho, he developed a love for people and service early on, including two years in Taiwan learning Mandarin Chinese while serving a mission.
A graduate of Brigham Young University–Idaho and the University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry, Dr. Shumway is a member of the Academy of General Dentistry and stays active in continuing education to keep his skills current. Known for his calm chairside manner and genuine compassion, he combines clinical excellence with a neighbor-friendly approach that helps even anxious patients feel at ease.
Neighbor-Friendly Service for the Greater Billings Area

Whether you need a regular cleaning, urgent dental care, or help improving your smile, we offer a friendly, honest approach that puts your comfort first.
Dr. Shumway and the team take time to explain your options, answer questions, and make sure every visit fits your needs and your budget. We care for kids, teens, adults, and seniors, all in one place; so your whole family can get the care they need without bouncing between offices. When you walk through our doors, you’re not just another appointment. You’re a neighbor, and we’ll treat you that way every time.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
1. When is a dental crown recommended instead of just a filling?
A crown is used when too much tooth is damaged for a filling to hold up, like after a large cavity, fracture, or root canal. Crowns protect and strengthen the tooth while restoring its natural shape and appearance. We’ll help you decide what’s best during your exam.
2. Can a dentist treat sleep apnea with snoring dental appliances instead of CPAP?
Yes, if your sleep apnea is mild to moderate, a custom-fit oral appliance can often help reposition your jaw to open your airway. These are quieter and more comfortable than CPAP machines for many patients. We’ll work with your physician if needed and fit you right here in our office.
3. Am I a good candidate for porcelain veneers and what is the process?
If your teeth are healthy but have chips, gaps, stains, or uneven shapes, veneers might be a great fit. We start with a consultation, design your smile, and place custom porcelain veneers that look natural and beautiful. It’s a simple process with dramatic results that can boost your confidence.
4. How do I choose the right cosmetic dentist in Billings for my smile goals?
Look for a dentist with experience in cosmetic procedures, great patient reviews, and before/after photos. Ask about materials, technology, and the dentist’s philosophy. At Shumway Family Dentistry, we focus on natural-looking results, honest guidance, and long-term durability; so you can love your smile and feel good about your care.
5. Can I get same-day emergency dental appointments for a broken tooth?
Yes. We offer same-day emergency appointments for broken teeth and other urgent issues. Call us right away and we’ll do everything we can to get you in quickly. The sooner you’re seen, the more options we have to save the tooth and relieve your discomfort.
6. What happens if I delay treatment for a dental emergency?
Delaying treatment can lead to worsening infection, more pain, or permanent damage; like tooth loss or bone deterioration. It may also limit your treatment options or increase costs. We strongly recommend getting urgent issues checked right away, even if the pain seems to come and go.
7. What are full & partial dentures and how do I know which I need?
Full dentures replace all your teeth on the upper or lower jaw, while partials fill gaps when you still have some natural teeth. We’ll examine your mouth, talk about your goals, and help you choose the best fit for comfort, appearance, and long-term function.
8. Can denture wearers still get dental implant restorations and what’s the benefit?
Yes, many denture wearers choose implant-supported restorations for better fit, comfort, and stability. Implants help secure your dentures so they don’t slip, and they protect your jawbone from shrinking. Even if you’ve had dentures for years, you might still be a candidate. We offer implant crown restorations right here.
